Curcumin in eye diseases

Submitted by dave on Wed, 07/14/2010 - 12:22am

Curcumin has been implicated in the treatment of certain eye diseases and conditions, including chronic anterior uveitis, an inflammatory condition of the vascular layer, particularly the iris. Read about a study that suggests that curcumin may be an effective therapeutic for a variety of inflammatory eye conditions.

hi ive been experiencing about 4 weeks now a stretching of light when i look at sources of light say from the tv or at a window, the light seems to stretch from the edge of the frame of the window and tv but also when i look at lights such as from the ceiling and lamp posts, I notice the light stretching like a strand of the light has come from it, still attached but leaving from the source.  my eyes appear fine when i dont blink when looking at areas of light and when im in surroundings that is lit but not looking at a direct source of the light.  i know in some cases our minds can play tr

A big thanks to Dave for this website which enables us to share our experiences.

Can we not capitalize on this?  I wonder if perhaps we could not offer our help as a group directly to researchers involved in finding cures for glaucoma.

I read so much news regarding optic nerve treatments, stem cell research, etc being done internationally and in the US. Surely our own anecdotal evidence might be of some small help.

My story of my trabeculectomy

Submitted by babsy on Tue, 07/06/2010 - 11:46am

My drops were stopped when my pressure was 18 every 6 months. My pressure then went up and I kept asking to go back on drops but I was told there is no damage to my optic nerve. When the pressure reached 30 they said so sorry you now have optic nerve damage. And I have been bombarded with drops and my pressure got down to 14. After a while it went back up to 24 and I showed a bit more optic nerve damage. A trabulectomy was given as only option. My sight was 20 20 vision. To keep it I agreed  to the operation. The operation has left me blind in that eye and in awful pain.

Glaucoma cure/prevention

Submitted by profbush on Tue, 06/22/2010 - 9:34pm

In the Rome University Eye Clinic in 1966 the usual number of primary open angle glaucoma cases existed who were unresponsive to any combination of medical therapies. In desperation, Virno et al., found an old paper describing a 1mm reduction with 1 gram of ascorbic acid (vitamin C.) Virno must have read the work of Dr. Fred Klenner MD FCCP who cured 59 cases of polio with injected sodium ascorbate for he then administered 7,500mgs 4 times/day (30 grams) orally, and was overjoyed to find the victims' pressures down and saving sight.

Excellent Glaucoma Specialist in NYC

Submitted by vinny on Mon, 06/21/2010 - 4:23pm

FYI, I have recently found an outstanding Glaucoma Specialist in NYC, Dr. Scott Smith, affiliated with the Harkness Institute of Columbia-Presybterian Medical Center,NYC. This physician has outstanding credentials, including fellowships at the Wilmer Institute at John Hopkins Medical Center and Massachusets General Hospital. In fact he was recommended to me by Dr. Harry Quigley, Director of Glaucoma at John Hopkins Medical Center.

Cataract surgery alone

Submitted by ralehmann on Mon, 06/21/2010 - 3:50pm

My cataracts have progressed lately, and at today's appointment with my glaucoma specialist, he said that I have a choice of either cataract surgery alone, because my glaucoma (POAG) appears to be stable, or a combined cataract/glaucoma surgery, which he prefers, although he admits that many glaucoma experts are currently recommending the cataract surgery first, as long as the glaucoma and IOP are stable, because it may be beneficial for the glaucoma.

Hi Dave - What is required to participate in the self-tonometry research group? I have heard about the special tonometer pricing available to people participating in the FitEyes community. How do I get started? Thank you.

TGF-beta2 induces senescence-associated changes in human trabecular meshwork cells

Submitted by dave on Sat, 06/19/2010 - 11:32am

Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is one of the leading causes of blindness in the world. This optic neuropathy is characterized by an elevated intraocular pressure, which may be attributed to an increased resistence in the aqueous humor outflow pathways.

Histological studies have demonstrated that primary open-angle glaucoma is associated with pathological changes in the trabecular meshwork (TM).

Recent investigations have revealed an accumulation of aged cells in the outflow pathways of glaucomatous eyes as compared to age-matched control eyes. Glaucoma is characterized by increased oxidative stress-induced aging of trabecular meshwork cells, thus leading to elevated intraocular pressure. The goal of this study was to analyse the role of TGF-β2 in the induction of cellular aging in cultured human trabecular meshwork cells.

I have written about the importance of thyroid to the eyes (thru high iodine content in the eye, the tissue similarity and thyroxine receptors present in the eye). I have also written about the importance of checking the toxic bromides (which inhibit proper thyroid function).

Fwd: Why I hate 3-D (and You Should Too)

An interesting article from Ebert ( www.newsweek.com/2010/04/30/why-i-hate-3-d-and-you-should-too.html ) which contained comments from two opthalmologists regarding the impact of 3-D on vision.

I've snipped the relevant excerpts (see below).
