Basic Background on the Optic Nerve and its Potential for Regeneration (thanks to Wikipedia)

Submitted by dave on Wed, 12/24/2008 - 6:08pm

According to a Wikipedia article about the optic nerve, the optic nerve is the second of twelve paired cranial nerves but is considered to be part of the central nervous system as it is derived from an outpouching of the diencephalon during embryonic development. Consequently, the fibers are covered with myelin produced by oligodendrocytes rather than the Schwann cells of the peripheral nervous system.

Test Results

. Today was my follow-up appointment with my Orthomo to discuss the results of my Visual Field Test and Optic Nerve Imaging Photos that were taken last week. To back up a little it was early this summer at my regular eye exam with my Optomotrist that it was discovered that my eye pressure was high and needed to be evaluated by a doctor. The Optomotrist measured 29 IOP.

When I have asthma attacks the ER admits me if [my oximetry readings] dip below 85 at all. I do go under 90% which could be one of times when the hemoglobin is unable to furnish plenty of oxygen. Maybe better management of my asthma would help.

I have taken an interest in monitoring oximetry while doing other IOP research, including while doing pranayama, Serene Impulse and many of the other techniques I'm testing. I don't have anything extremely interesting to report yet, however. UPDATE: see Eye Pressure Miracle.

optic nerve death

Submitted by andrea on Mon, 05/12/2008 - 10:02am

When a part or even the entire optic nerve is dead, I know it does not promote vision. Does theis death grow like when a limb had gangrene? Is the Nerve 'dead' so it should be rejected by the body? I think it must mean something different from most tissue dead for optic nerves to be determined dead. Does anyone know or have a good hypothesis?

Supplement, herbs, alternative medines to lower IOP and regenerate eye nere cells

Submitted by pmpvip on Sat, 10/27/2007 - 6:12pm

I need immidiate suggestions on the alternative medicines from aruvedic, chinese or herbal or nutrional area which are very helpful

(1) In reducing IOP in glaucoma

 (2) Recover and regenerate nerve cells in the eye that are damaged in eye due to glucoma.

I know they may be spread along several post, but I wanted to start most effective supplements immidiately So I need names, how much we should take and where you can buy that on internet. I have not seen any Special Glaucoma Supplement in drug stores.

I should wait little more for drops to work or go for Trablculectomy immidiately?

Thanks for answering my question in length and depth.

Since there is no sure cure for recovering from damage of Optic nerve caused by glaucoma in our ALOPATHIC treatments, I was looking for other possible treatments in Conjuction with Alopathic for my self.

Is cup size change from .6 mm to .8 mm in a year rapid deterioration?

Submitted by villandra on Sun, 08/05/2007 - 10:30pm

Question; if the cup of my optic nerve has expanded from .6 mm to .8 mm in a year, is this rapid deterioration, or slight deterioration?   Intuitively it seems like alot of deterioration, but I don't really know how much meaning it has.   However, a year ago it was considered on the borderline of normal at .6 mm.   After doing a nerve scan the glaucoma specialist thought at the time that it looked most like normal variation.

Yours,

Dora Smith

A medicine designed for treating Alzheimer's patients has been found to work for treating glaucoma, according to a research group at Tokyo Medical and Dental University.

The finding may lead to preventing the loss of eyesight due to glaucoma. The report was to be carried in the online edition of U.S. magazine The Journal of Clinical Investigation on Friday.

New to Glaucoma (and the forum!)

Hello, everyone.

Thanks to the power of Google I came across this wonderful site.  I'm a 30 year-old in Phoenix, AZ with low/normal pressure Glaucoma.  I was diagnosed in February '07 after switching eye care providers.  For the last handful of years, I had been going to Nationwide Vision Center for my annual eye exams.  They never required me to undergo eye dilation, and not knowing how important that is, I never insisted.  When I switched to my current eye doctor, she dilated my eyes and the rest is history.
