How do ophthalmologists feel about self-tonometry?

Submitted by dave on Fri, 03/12/2010 - 3:04pm

Here's what one well-respected ophthalmologist told his patient in response to her inquiry about starting home eye pressure monitoring.

You are certainly ahead of the curve in using self tonometry. Monitoring eye pressure at home has been a goal for Opthalmology for many years, but I was unaware that any practical options existed until your e-mail. As a result, I don't have much expertise to offer. You may know more about it than I do. I would like to have you show me anything you are considering before using it regularly just to make sure it won't do you any harm. I hope that helps.

I think this is a wonderful reply. This medical doctor sounds like someone I would recommend to other glaucoma patients. If I get his permission, I'll post his contact info. However, I hope his supportive attitude is inspiration for other doctors who receive self-tonometry inquires from patients.
