What are fit eyes?

A person with fit eyes has 20/20 or better vision, without question. However, fit eyes covers a lot more than just seeing 20/20 under standard testing conditions.

A person with fit eyes can see clearly (20/20 or better) both up close and at distance. (Standard tests for 20/20 vision don't always cover the full spectrum of distances.) Furthermore, a person with fit eyes can see well under a variety of lighting conditions. Anyone with fit eyes can read comfortably (without strain) in dim light, even if the print is small. This person can also see comfortably in bright sunlight without sun glasses. (The choice to wear sun glasses or not is another topic, but a person with fit eyes doesn't experience eye pain when walking out into bright sunlight from indoors, for example.) A person with fit eyes also has good night vision.

A person with fit eyes has good depth perception, good peripheral vision and good color perception. Fit eyes are aware of many things in a wide field of vision. People with 20/20 vision might miss a lot of information that a person with truly fit eyes would naturally perceive.

Furthermore, fit eyes react and adapt quickly. This quality is particularly important for athletes, but it is also vital for anyone who drives an automobile or walks in cities with busy streets.

If you are a professional athlete, having fit eyes is important for your performance. But for all of us, having fit eyes is important not only for our safety, but for our general quality of life.

Having fit eyes means having eyes that are not prone to chronic eye diseases such as cataracts or (primary open angle) glaucoma. Fit eyes are also less likely to deteriorate into conditions like presbyopia ("middle age loss of ability to read"). If you already have chronic or age-related vision degeneration, a fit eyes program can help restore better vision, the same way fitness programs for the mind or body help restore lost capabilities.

However, fit eyes is not associated strictly with "eye exercises". Think of a person who does a lot of physical exercise yet eats poorly, doesn't allow his or her body to rest and recover from exercise, is under a lot of stress, smokes and drinks and stays up all night. Obviously, such a person will not become fit (or stay fit) with that kind of lifestyle.

The same is true for fit eyes. Gaining or maintaining fit eyes is about good nutrition for the eyes, good vision habits (including resting the eyes and learning how to use the eyes without strain), good general health habits and healthy mental and emotional states.
