Stewart, Townley Top Daytona Supercross

Submitted by dave on Sat, 03/10/2007 - 2:14pm

Dave's note: I'm really looking forward to seeing Townley race against Reed and Stewart in the future. In Europe, Townley proved that he had the speed to run with Stefan Everts. Everts is one of the few riders in the world who could compete with Ricky Carmichael. Does that mean Townley might have the speed to run with Reed and Stewart next year? I'm excited to find out. Of course, I don't believe anyone can match Bubba's speed, but I am inclined to believe that Townley has the speed to make the podium in the premier class. We might see a lot of podiums with Stewart, Reed and Townley if I'm right.

What does this post have to do with vision? Nothing - except for the fact that I was watching the race in person, so I saw it with my own eyes ;)

Here's a full report on the race.

James Stewart won his first Daytona Supercross.

Kawasakis swept the Daytona Supercross on Friday Night at Daytona International Speedway. MotoXXX’s Kyle Lewis grabbed the main-event holeshot, followed closely by Monster Energy Kawasaki’s James Stewart, SoBe No Fear/Samsung Honda’s Kevin Windham, Yamaha’s Grant Langston and Makita Suzuki’s Ricky Carmichael. San Manuel Yamaha’s Chad Reed sat eighth.

Stewart moved immediately into the lead and began to distance himself from the pack. Windham moved into second. By lap two, Carmichael sat third and began working on Windham for second, making the pass stick on lap four. From there, it was a distant chase, as Carmichael did his best to stay as close to Stewart as he could. He remained approximately the same distance behind Stewart for the last 15 laps of the race or so.

Ricky Carmichael finished second in his last Daytona Supercross.

At the finish, it was Stewart with his seventh win of the season, followed by Carmichael in his last appearance at Daytona – on a motorcycle, anyway – and Reed, who had recovered from his poor start for third. Then came Stewart’s teammate Timmy Ferry and Windham.

Rockstar Suzuki’s Andrew McFarlane grabbed the holeshot to start the Lites main, followed by Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Ben Townley and Team Honda’s Tommy Hahn. Townley and Hahn went by McFarlane on lap two, and Hahn began to pressure Townley for the lead, even briefly making a pass for the lead on Townley only a few laps into the race.

Ben Townley won his second Lites supercross main in a row.

Townley successfully fought Hahn off and Hahn made a few mistakes, allowing Townley to pull away a bit. At the finish, it was Townley with his second win in a row, followed by Hahn and Red Bull KTM’s Mike Alessi. Round-one winner Ryan Dungey failed to make the main event after crashes in both his heat and LCQ.
