Calcium and Magnesium affects on IOP

Submitted by dsaito on Sun, 01/16/2011 - 2:09pm

I saw an interesting program on television where a woman giving birth went into a very serious seizure.  The doctors were scrambling to find magnesium to handle the seizure, but they were out!  They searched and searched and finally found some.  The magnesium was administered via IV.  Once the magnesium was administered the seizure stopped.  However, the patient become unresponsive and was unconcious.  They had found in their rush to find the magnesium, they had administered too much.   Luckily the lead doctor was studying recently for an exam, and knew the antidote to magnesium overdose is

Who can we trust to provide good advice about natural glaucoma treatments?

Submitted by dave on Sat, 01/15/2011 - 2:08pm

The title of an article by Dr. Mercola caught my attention. He wrote an article on his website and entitled it, "Six Sure-Fire Tips to Prevent Glaucoma Naturally".

Let's examine Dr. Mercola's suggestions one by one and see if they are sound.

Please help with a comprehensive model of glaucoma

Submitted by Steve Richfield on Thu, 01/13/2011 - 2:13am

Hi all,

We seem to have enough information to form a rough draft of a comprehensive model of glaucoma. A model is subtly different than an explanation, in that an explanation must be based on something, e.g. direct observation, undeniable inference, lack of alteratives, etc., whereas as a model reads the same, except:

1.  Models are usually more detailed than explanations, because provability is no obstacle.

2.  Models choose "most likely" alternatives, and discard other viable possibilities.

A simple test of the autoimmune theory of glaucoma...

Submitted by Steve Richfield on Sun, 01/09/2011 - 9:18pm

EDITOR: please see this related article: The real facts about low body temperature and glaucoma

Hi all,

I came up with a simple question which you the reader of this posting can help answer, and which could just maybe lead to a rifle-shot cure for glaucoma without need to lower IOPs. Here's the story:

The Midpoint on the way to IOP Control

Submitted by Steve Richfield on Sun, 01/09/2011 - 11:56am

Nearly all health research efforts (and this forum is definitely a health research effort) have their midpoint marked when they can answer the simple question:

"Why is this problem really a good thing?!"

The answers to these questions usually come in the form of an understanding why we would already be dead if not for the "problem".

While I haven't read every single posting here, I have read many of them, and I see a possible midpoint emerging from them. I would enjoy seeing comments and observations that confirm/deny this picture. Consider...

You should all listen to this Ivan Goldberg interview

Submitted by dave on Fri, 01/07/2011 - 8:37pm

This audio file contains an interesting interview with Dr. Ivan Goldberg (University of Sydney). Dr. Ritch recommends that we all listen to it.

Members of the FitEyes self-tonometry group should be regularly utilizing the water drinking test. See this message:

A newbe here with a different view of glaucoma...

Submitted by Steve Richfield on Thu, 01/06/2011 - 11:06am

Hi. I'm Steve. I am 65 years old. I have some experience with health research, and see the whole glaucoma issue from a slightly different view...

In health research, the halfway point is often marked by being able to answer the question: "Why is this illness really a good thing?!!!" The answer usually comes in the form of an explanation of how you would have already died a horrible death if not for the "disease process" intervening. I see no reason to suspect that glaucoma is any exception.

Sleeping with Head Elevated (actual results)

Submitted by dsaito on Fri, 12/31/2010 - 10:36am

After reading the full study on the effect of sleeping at a 30 degree incline, I decided to try it out.   Normally, my pressure is around 19 in both eyes first thing in the morning.  It drops within 15-30 minutes to 13-14 with normal activity (not exercise).

So, my problem is how do I lower my pressure while sleeping ?  The study seemed to offer a good solution and it can't hurt to try this once, so I figured I'd give it a shot.

Research on how moods affect eye pressure

Submitted by dave on Sat, 12/18/2010 - 1:16pm

In an upcoming version of the FitEyes Insight software I hope to provide a very easy way to track moods along with eye pressure measurements. In preparation for that, I am working on a list of moods.

If those of us monitoring our own eye pressure at home want to correlate our moods with changes in our IOP, we will need some standardized definitions of moods.

How I first became aware that my ego could raise my eye pressure

Submitted by dave on Thu, 12/16/2010 - 12:24am

This is a story about my first clues into the role my ego played in my intraocular pressure fluctuations (and spikes). This happened in 2006 or 2007 after I had started self-tonometry and had been doing it long enough to see a clear relationship between stress and my eye pressure.

A long-time friend invited me to an informal dinner with a world-famous celebrity. I had met the celebrity previously and we got along fine. We shared a common interest in health topics, so the conversations were always interesting.

Quantum Biofeedback to Balance Emotions

Submitted by Jose Hurtado Pr... on Wed, 12/15/2010 - 10:08pm

My friend's aunt was diagnosed with glaucoma, she lost 60% in one eye and 40% in the other. She started sessions of quantum biofeedback to balance her emotions and her IOP had stabilized. Her energy medicine doctor is using some kind of homeophatic product that is helping her to see clearer. I dont kow How effective this might be. Anybody knows more about it?

How important are nutrients like resveratrol in managing eye pressure?

Submitted by dave on Mon, 12/06/2010 - 10:07pm

Ellen Troyer and others had a nice conversation about resveratrol in the FitEyes.com mailing list. (I can post the whole conversation below if requested.)

I enjoyed reading this conversation. There are lots of good points here. However, for me, the single most important statement was the one below by Ellen.

Since resveratrol is only one of the nutrients found in grapes and wine, it makes biological sense that it would be the most effective when presented with a balanced amount of other polyphenols molecules.

I fire another opthalmologist

Submitted by Maurice Dubois on Thu, 12/02/2010 - 5:58pm

My new ophthalmologist came highly recommended; he works in a large, modern office with three other ophthalmologists. The first time I saw him he pretty much dismissed my tonometer; I was disappointed at his attitude. He asked why I'd come to him and I explained that the previous one would not give me a prescription for the tonometer (personal connections got me the prescription). "I wouldn't have given you a prescription either," he answered.

I almost did a double take. "Why," I asked.

How thoughts and emotions affect eye pressure

Submitted by mleach on Sun, 11/28/2010 - 6:52pm

Dave,

Am I correct in concluding that the tonometer somehow offers objective evidence of thoughts and emotions, and that this feedback leads to a process of self-discovery and a realignment, or better adjustment, of the self to the external world? As you know I do not have a tonometer yet, so some of what you have to say about the process I cannot understand at this point, but I would like to gather the general idea. I will be out of town the rest of this week, but definitely will want to revisit this exchange so that I can come to understand.

AT550

Submitted by sjcooke on Tue, 11/23/2010 - 11:18am

Just saw a used AT550 on ebay.  I wanted to ask a couple of questions.  I read some past posts that suggested that the AT550 wasn't good for self-tonometry.........why is this??  Sounds like you just look at something, push a button, and it takes the measurement.  Sounds fairly user-friendly.  Also, if I were to buy a used instrument, how much do you think it would cost?  How much are one of these new??  Thanks for your answers on this one.
