I just had my Omega-3 Index tested by OmegaQuant, a leader in fatty acid analysis. It is a simple, inexpensive, home-based test. In this post I share my results and provide some discussion of what they mean in the context of glaucoma. I also share my thoughts on the supplements needed to achieve even better test results!

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Improve Vision In Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a chronic, neurodegenerative disease that is the second most common cause of blindness in the world. All available treatment is focused on lowering IOP to slow the progression of the disease, with no current therapy to reverse visual field loss or improve visual acuity available. Therefore, in this article, the authors describe the use of high dose omega‐3 fatty acids to combat the neuro‐inflammation in glaucoma patients, thereby improving visual acuity and visual field in glaucoma patients. Novel Metabolism of Docosahexaenoic Acid in Neural Cells

Introduction

Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids are highly enriched in the nervous system. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6n-3),in particular, is the most abundant polyunsaturated fatty acid in the brain and is concentrated in aminophospholipids of cell membranes. Numerous studies have indicated that this concentration of DHA in the nervous system is essential for optimal neuronal and retinal functions (1).

Although the underlying mechanisms of its essential function are still not clearly understood, emerging evidence suggests that unique metabolism of DHA in relation to its incorporation into neuronal membrane phospholipids plays an important role. In this review, biochemical mechanisms for enriching and metabolizing DHA in neural cells are discussed in the context of their biological significance in neuronal function.

Fish Oils For Vision

Your omega-3 fish oil products may be too low in DHA. Or contain rancid oils and pollutants. Whatever the case is, you want to be sure that you are fully benefiting from your fish oil supplement. Here you can read Dave's advice for selecting a DHA or Omega-3 supplement for the eyes.

New to Glaucoma (and the forum!)

Hello, everyone.

Thanks to the power of Google I came across this wonderful site.  I'm a 30 year-old in Phoenix, AZ with low/normal pressure Glaucoma.  I was diagnosed in February '07 after switching eye care providers.  For the last handful of years, I had been going to Nationwide Vision Center for my annual eye exams.  They never required me to undergo eye dilation, and not knowing how important that is, I never insisted.  When I switched to my current eye doctor, she dilated my eyes and the rest is history.
