Blindness Carried by the Ego is Complete Darkness

How many of you are watching Oprah Winfrey's webcasts with Echkart Tolle: A New Earth Web Event? I suggest it is worth watching. There is more to the connection between this topic and our visual health than one might realize at first glance.

The current discussion is about the ego's role in our health and happiness. The term ego, as used in this context, means our sense of individual, separate self. Our ego is what conceptually defines us as individual humans.

If I am right that stress is involved in glaucoma and other vision problems, then the ego plays a central role in that relationship. Indeed, it is almost certain that our emotions are largely responsible for our state of health. Again, the ego plays a central role in that relationship.

I came across some quotes by the Indian spiritual leader Mata Amritanandamayi today that fit right in with the topic of last night's A New Earth Web Event as well as with my thought about the relationship between sight and the ego; those quotes are the inspiration for today's blog post.

Mata Amritanandamayi (Ammachi) is known around the world as a radiant embodiment of unconditional love. Ammachi literally hugs the thousands and thousands of people who come to see her.

Mata Amritanandamayi warns her students of the dangers of the ego, saying: "Blindness of the eyes is bearable and can be managed. . . . You can still have a loving and compassionate heart. But when you are blinded by the ego, you are completely blind. . . . The blindness carried by the ego pushes you into complete darkness."
