More on oxidative stress in neurodegenerative diseases

Submitted by dave on Sun, 08/10/2008 - 10:34pm

Glaucoma is a neurodegenerative disease of the optic nerve. Neuroprotection should be of great interest to any glaucoma patient. The abstracts below deal with potential use of dietary antioxidants in the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative disorders.

Therapeutic effects of curcumin, the anti-inflammatory agent, against neurodegenerative diseases such as glaucoma

Interesting research about therapeutic effects of curcumin against an array of widely-spread diseases with Dave's comments. The article also makes reference to "ancient treatments" and discusses the very nature of inflammation.

Laser Surgery

I wonder if anyone has experience with this laser surgery for glaucoma. My IOP's range fropm 12 to 17. I have been getting a great deal of vision loss at this range. I guess the laser would lower it even more??? How low can it go? This is really sort of scary as I though my pressures were low. Ususally they are 12 to 15. I did check with one of the chain vision places about refular and frequent checks and they said they dont do that unless you are actively using their services. I guess this means 'full service.' If anyone knows about this laser stuff it would be great to hear. Thanks

Blueberries are just about the best food you could consume for protecting your vision

Submitted by dave on Sat, 08/02/2008 - 11:34pm

In a prior article about the best foods for fit eyes, I strongly recommended blueberries, grapes and raisins. I said, "According to Dr. Abel, [blueberries, grapes and raisins] contain anthocyanins, which improve night vision. A cup full of blueberries, huckleberry jam, or a 100 mg bilberry supplement should improve dark adaptation within 30 minutes."

Vitamins and pressure

I guess I am like a lot of people, I take vitamins in hopes of preventing desease and to feel better. I started taking lots of Leutin and 2 1000mg of bilberry each day since they are supposed to be eye vitamins. I told a friend about the bilberry and he said it made his eyes water and I noticed mine do too.  Has anyone who tests their own pressure ever taken these vitamins to see if they bring the pressure down?
