Yale using new techniques to treat glaucoma

Just saw this article in the NewHavenRegister.  Dr. Nils Loewen of yale Eye Center uses a treatment for advanced cases  The article states " The second procedure involves inserting a gold shunt to drain fluid and is only used in advanced cases.  Loewen said it"s somthing that i'm particularly excited about because we're are only one of six centers in the US to offer this. 

A small piece of gold is inserted under the eyelid, which " shunts fluid into a previously unutilized area, the supra-choroidal space"

The influence of topically applied benzalkonium chloride on ocular flare measurements

About 10 years ago I've visited my ophthalmologist for the first time when I suffered from herpes zoster (also known as zona) in the facial area, close to my right eye. It was then, for the first time in my life, my eye pressure was measured. She noticed an elevated eye pressure and asked me whether I had family members suffering from glaucoma (I dont have any btw). We didn't pay much of attention to the IOP at that time as the primary reason for visiting the ophthalmologist was to treat the herpes zoster infection in order to protect the right eye.

aminoguanidine and glaucoma

It is known now that the optical nerve on glaucoma patients is due to the different changes in the eyes between pressure and less or non pressure. So the drops we are taking are reducing the pressure but are not protecting the optical nerve although I read that Brimonidine drops do a better job in doing so.  I found  out that aminoguanidine has been scientifically proven to protect the optical nerve in animal.  Can't find any research on humans.

stem cell and glaucoma

Has anyone undergone stem cell therapy for glaucoma.   They do practice stem cells at http://www.xcell-center.com/

I was told that they are ready to do it but noone has wanted to be the first.    I have read many scientific articles of the success of stem cells for glaucoma on animals but nothing on human yet.
